Lions Team Up to Fight Cancer

MARS HILL, N.C.-- On February 18, Mars Hill’s basketball teams and softball team will be hosting the annual Pink Zone event to raise awareness for breast cancer research. Fans are encouraged to attend and wear pink in support of the event.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will be taking part in the Kay Yow Cancer Fund’s “Play 4 Kay” initiative. The initiative was founded in 2007 to foster the development of breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, and in the community. “Play 4 Kay” is named for legendary coach Kay Yow, who passed away Jan. 24, 2009 after a public and courageous battle with cancer. The “Play 4 Kay” event is sponsored by the South Atlantic Conference, with all ten women’s basketball teams in the conference hosting events in support of the initiative.

Donations will be collected at both basketball events and the softball event, with all money raised going to the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation. Pink “Paws for the Cure” t-shirts will be on sale for $8 at both locations as well. Basketball will also be hosting a raffle and bake sale in support of the cause.

The first 50 fans who show up wearing pink to the basketball games will receive coupons for a free waffle, courtesy of Waffle House. Halftime of the men’s basketball game will feature a pink waffle-eating contest, and there will be other Waffle House give-a-ways throughout the game.

The Feb. 18 “Play 4 Kay” event will be women’s basketball’s last home game of the season. The team will honor seniors Taylor Deal and Jackie Simon prior to the final home game of their Lions careers. Tip-off against Wingate follows at 2:00 p.m., with the men’s game following at 4:00 p.m. The men’s basketball team will be honoring seniors Petar Kostic, Dallas Johnson, JaShawn Anderson and Sammy Emile prior to the contest.

The softball team will be hosting King as part of the Pink Zone activities, with first pitch against King scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Fans and students are encouraged to wear pink and attend these events in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and breast cancer research.
