Lions Swept by Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C.-- The Mars Hill softball team dropped 8-0 and 10-2 South Atlantic Conference games to Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday afternoon. Mars Hill is now 20-18 overall, 5-7 in SAC play. Lenoir-Rhyne improved to 35-10 overall, 9-3 in SAC play.

Eight players had two RBI's to pace Lenoir-Rhyne offensively- Jessica Fellmeth, Jody Mizelle, Tameron Sealey, Sarah Atkins, Carlee Carpenter, Marie Mauhar, Brittany Davidson and Brittany Coursen. Dawon Millwood threw a three-hitter for her 11th shutout of the season in game one and picked up a pair of victories in the circle. Mars Hill was led by Taylor Morris, who had two hits and an RBI. Sarah Kruysman also drove in a run for the Lions.

Game One
Millwood threw her 11th shutout of the season and the Bears scored seven runs in the last two innings for the 8-0 victory in five innings.

The Bears were ahead by a 1-0 score after three innings of play before breaking the contest open with four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning. Sealey connected on a two-run double in the fourth before Coursen ended the game with a run-scoring single in the fifth.

Morris, Stephanie McGrath, and Megan Arrington each collected hits in the game for Mars Hill.

Game Two
Jody Mizelle and senior pinch hitter Brittany Davidson each drove in a pair of runs as the Bears finished with 15 hits to earn the 10-2 victory in six innings.

Mizelle's two-run double in the bottom of the second inning helped stake Lenoir-Rhyne to a 4-0 advantage after two innings of play.

Mars Hill cut the margin in half with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Morris drove in a run with an RBI-single, and Kruysman followed with an RBI-hit of her own the cut the score to 4-2.

However, Lenoir-Rhyne broke the game wide open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-2 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to an Atkins RBI single. Atkins finished with three hits on the game to lead the Bears.

Millwood was credited with the victory, improving her record to 23-5 on the season. 

Mars Hill will be in action again on Wednesday, April 4 when they travel to Young Harris for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
