
Lions Fall in First Round of SAC Tournament
April 19, 2012GREENEVILLE, TENN.-- The Mars Hill softball team was defeated by Lenoir-Rhyne, 5-1, in the first round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Softball Championship at Tusculum College.
Jessica Fellmeth homered and drove in two runs to pace Lenoir-Rhyne offensively. Dawon Millwood tossed a complete game, scattering four hits and striking out two to earn the victory. Natalie Haithcox doubled home the Lions lone run. Lenoir-Rhyne advances to face Tusculum in the second round. Mars Hill will face Carson-Newman in an elimination game at 1 p.m. at Chuckey-Doad High School.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored single runs in each of the first three frames to build a 3-0 lead. Fellmeth homered with two outs in the first to get the Bears on the board. Jody Mizelle and Brittany Coursen added run-scoring hits over the next two innings for a three-run advantage.
Mars Hill rallied to score its run in the top of the fifth. Ashley McCurry drew a leadoff walk, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Robyn Stanek. Haithcox's RBI-double scored McCurry to cut the score to 3-1.
The Bears put the game away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. A Fellmeth sacrifice fly made the score 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, and Megan Laxton added a pinch-hit RBI to cap the scoring.
