Baseball Loses Close Battle at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – Mars Hill lost a 2-0 decision in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. Evan Rogers and Caleb Edwards had solid performances for the Lions.

Lion starter Caleb Edwards threw a great game pitching 6.2 innings allowing just two Tornado hits and one earned run. Unfortunately, he took the loss (1-3) on the mound. Rogers went 2-3 at the plate and was perfect in the field on eight chances.

Brevard College starter Kevin Hamilton tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Tornados baseball team. Hamilton (4-0) struck out a career-high 12 batters while pitching around seven hits over nine innings. The righty didn’t issue a walk and wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the fifth inning to preserve the shutout.

The Tornados gained a 1-0 lead in the third when Chad Fisher scored on a throwing error after reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Champ Stuart walked with one out in the bottom of the eighth, stole second and third before scoring on a Kody Spencer sacrifice fly to put BC up 2-0 going into the 9th. Hamilton retired the Lions in order in the ninth to seal the victory.

Due to the forecast of inclement weather on Saturday, the Tornados and Lions will resume their series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, playing two seven-inning games beginning at 1 p.m.
