Lions down 12th-Ranked Barry in Opener

Box Score

MARS HILL, N.C.-- The 17th-ranked Mars Hill men's soccer team opened with three unanswered goals to earn a season-opening 3-1 victory over 12th-ranked Barry at Meares Stadium Thursday night.

Alex Mullen scored two goals and assisted on another, and Shadi Harb added a third goal for the Lions. Goalkeeper Zac Scott made two saves as part of a stiff defensive effort by the Lions. Connor Randel scored the lone goal for Barry. The victory for the Lions was the first of head coach Gary Hamel's Mars Hill tenure.

Harb got the Lions on the board early at the nine-minute mark. Harb took a pass from Mullen, beat a defender and unleashed a left-footer for a 1-0 Mars Hill lead.

Harb set up the first of Mullen's two goals with a pretty dish to the midfielder all alone on the wing. Mullen's shot found the back of the net for a 2-0 Lion lead in the 58th-minute.

Mullen scored his final tally off a beautiful corner kick from Felipe Ferraro. A perfectly-placed pass from Ferraro was headed-in by Mullen for a 3-0 lead for MHC. The goal came at the 61st-minute mark.

Barry added a goal in the game's final minute by Randel.

The Lions outshot the Buccaneer 22-11.

Mars Hill will be in action again on Saturday, Sept. 1 at King. The contest kicks off at 5 p.m.
