Lions open with Split at Tournament

FLORENCE, S.C.-- The Mars Hill volleyball team opened the season with a three-set sweep to earn the victory over Pfeiffer, and fell in five sets to USC-Aiken at the Francis Marion Tournament at the Smith University Center on Friday.

Mars Hill earned 25-23, 25-21 and 25-20 set victories to win the match with Pfeiffer. The Lions dropped the first two sets to USC-Aiken 23-25 and 20-25, rallied to win the next two 25-21 and 25-23, before falling 11-15 in the deciding set. Mars Hill is now 1-1 on the season overall.

Toni Cole paced Mars Hill with 17 kills and a .244 hitting percentage in the USC-Aiken match. Maggie Murphy led the Lions defensively with 25 digs in the match.

Tournament play continues tomorrow. The Lions will take on Mount Olive at 9 a.m. and Francis Marion at 5 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Smith University Center on the campus of Francis Marion in Florence, S.C.
