Lions Fall to Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C.-- The Mars Hill volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by Francis Marion in the final game of the Francis Marion Tournament at Smith University Center.

The Lions took the first set 25-20, before falling 23-25, 20-25, 23-25 in the final three sets. Marissa Wixson paced Mars Hill offensively with 17 kills, and added 11 digs and a pair of blocks. Francis Marion was paced by Liz Drewry with 23 kills and a .370 hitting percentage. Mars Hill fell to 2-2 on the season, while Francis Marion improved to 3-1.

A solid defensive effort by Mars Hill sparked the victory in the first set. The Lions held Francis Marion to a .062 hitting percentage in the set. MHC totalled 14 blocks on the afternoon, led by Toni Cole who was in on four blocks. Cole added nine kills and a pair of digs in the match.

Hillary Gambrell and Regan Macomson each added eight kills for Mars Hill. Maggie Murphy led the Lions with 29 digs.

Francis Marion hit .255, 250 and .306 over the final three sets to help spark the victories. In addition to Drewry's efforts, Paige Perrault (14) and Jessica Imbimbo (10) each reached double-digit kills for the Patriots.

Mars Hill will be in action again on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Winston-Salem State, with match time set for 6:30 p.m.
