Lions Sweep Rams

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—  The Mars Hill volleyball team took care of business with a three-set sweep of Winston-Salem State at the C.E. Gaines Center Tuesday night.

Mars Hill earned 25-16, 25-13 and 25-14 victories. Marissa Wixson paced the Lion attack with 17 kills and a .593 hitting percentage. Regan Macomson added eight kills and a pair of blocks. Becca Smith spread the ball around for the Lion attack, picking up 34 assists. Defensively, the Lions didn't allow Winston-Salem State to earn a hitting percentage higher than .000 in any of the three sets. Mars Hill improved to 3-2 with the victory, while Winston-Salem State fell to 0-4.

The Lions jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first set on their way to the 25-16 win. Wixson paved the way with eight kills and a .615 hitting percentage. Hillary Gambrell paced the Lions defensively with five digs in the set.

Mars Hill broke open a three-all tie with a seven-point run to take a 10-3 lead and never looked back in the second set. The Lions hit .385 in the set while holding the Rams to a .000 percentage. Maggie Murphy paced the Lions defensively with 12 digs overall in the match, while Christen Nicholson added six.

Wixson and Kaleigh Sutherland each paced the Lions with four kills in the final set.

Winston-Salem State was paced by Francesca Edgerton with six kills. Avoni Seymour added nine digs for the Rams.

Mars Hill will be in action again on Friday, Sept. 7 against Cedarville in Charleston, W. Va. with match time set for 2 p.m. The Lions will follow that with a match against Virginia Union at 4 p.m. the same day.
