Lions Fall to Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C.-- The Mars Hill volleyball team took the second set at Catawba, but fell to the Indians 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference action at Goodman Gym Saturday afternoon. Mars Hill is now 6-5 on the season, 0-2 in SAC play. Catawba improved to 3-5 overall, 1-1 in conference play.

After dropping the first set, the Lions rallied to take the next set 25-20 before falling in the last two sets, 25-11 and 25-9. Toni Cole paced Mars Hill with 13 kills. Marissa Wixson added a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Catawba was led by Kaitlyn Whitmer with 18 kills and 15 digs. Alli Parrish added 11 kills and 12 digs.

After splitting the first two sets, Catawba hit .500 and .389 over the last two sets. to earn the victory. Abby Pennington also had 13 kills for the Indians on a .650 hitting percentage. Catawba had five players reach double-digit digs. Jordan Raye passed out 46 assists for the Indians.

Maggie Murphy paced Mars Hill with 25 digs. Christen Nicholson added 12 digs. Catawba outblocked Mars Hill by a 9-0 margin.

Mars Hill will host their home opener against SAC-foe Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Chambers Gymnasium.
