Volleyball Prevails in Five Sets over Anderson

MARS HILL, N.C.-- The Mars Hill volleyball game prevailed in a five-set marathon to earn a 3-2 victory over Anderson in South Atlantic Conference action at Stanford Arena Friday afternoon. Mars Hill defeated Anderson 23-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-27, 17-15 to earn the victory.

Marissa Wixson paced the Lions with a double-double, putting away 19 kills and coming away with 14 digs defensively. Toni Cole added 14 kills, four aces, a dig, and three solo blocks. Anderson was paced by Shannon Gillespie with 20 kills and 12 digs, while Hailey Pittman added 14 kills. Mars Hill extended its winning streak to three and improved to 9-5 overall, 3-2 in SAC play. Anderson fell to 8-6 overall, 1-4 in conference play.

Hannah Wilson added her second-consecutive double-double with 24 assists and 11 digs. Maggie Murphy led all players with 28 digs. Christen Nicholson added 14 digs for the Lions. Jill Biediger and Regan Macomson contributed eight kills apiece offensively for the Lions.

Anderson took the first set behind a .378 hitting percentage. The Lions fought back to take the middle two sets, hitting a blistering .357 hitting percentage in the third set. The Lions fought back from a 17-9 deficit in the final set to extend the match, but two kills by Victoria Wehrmann gave the Trojans the victory.

The Lions faced match point in the final set before rallying to earn the victory. Trailing 14-13, Wixson extended the set with a kill. The two teams then traded points on a Trojan attack error and a kill by Shannon Gillespie to tie the score at 15-apiece. Another kill by Wixson and a block by Macomson and Biediger sealed the victory.

Mars Hill will host Newberry tomorrow at 5 p.m. in Stanford Arena.
