Catawba Upsets No. 17 Men's Soccer

Lions lose in overtime

MARS HILL, N.C. – Carson Smith scored on a header off a throw in to lift Catawba over no. 17 Mars Hill, 2-1 in men’s soccer action Friday night in the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Lions fell to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. Catawba improved to 5-2-3 on the season and 1-0-3 in the league.

Felipe Ferraro scored the first goal of the match at the 78:54 mark from 20 yards away. The goal was assisted by Shadi Harb.  Brian Woulfe then kicked a ball 54 yards that just passed over the Lions’ keeper to tie the contest at 1-all in the 81st minute. Corey Faughnan assisted the match winner off the throw in.

MHC outshot Catawba, 17-10. The Lions edged Catawba in corner kicks, 6-2. Mars Hill was called offsides three times while Catawba had one offsides call. Zac Scott played 99:27 in goal for the Lions and made three saves. Frankie Cardelle played the entire match in the net for Catawba and also made three stops.

The Lions will host Mt. Olive College on October 3. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
