Lions Fall to Wolves in Four

MARS HILL, N.C.-- The Mars Hill volleyball team was defeated in four sets by Newberry in South Atlantic Conference action at Stanford Arena Saturday afternoon.

Mars Hill took the first set, 25-23, before falling 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 over the final three sets. The match snapped the Lions' three-match winning streak. Marissa Wixson posted a double-double for Mars Hill with 11 kills and 17 digs, while Hannah Wilson recorded her third consecutive double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs. Newberry was paced by Samantha Parrish with 15 kills, while Blair Browning passed out 56 assists. The Wolves improved to 8-8 overall, 2-4 in SAC play. Mars Hill is now 9-6 overall, 3-3 in conference play.

After hitting just .100 in the first set, Newberry hit .441, .353 and .343 over the final three sets. In addition to Parrish, three other Wolves reached double figures in kills- Amanda Soper (14), Jessica King (11) and Madison Schultz (10). Parrish and Soper each added 11 digs. Elayni Stokes paced Newberry with 24 digs.

Toni Cole matched Wixson with a team-high 11 kills, and added five digs and three aces. Regan Macomson chipped in with eight kills. Maggie Murphy added 16 kills for the Lions.

Mars Hill will travel to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 7:00 p.m. match on  Friday, Oct. 5.
