Lions Swept by Pioneers

MARS HILL, N.C.-- The Mars Hill volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference action at Stanford Arena Tuesday night.

The Pioneers took all three sets by 25-20 scores. Tusculum was paced by Megan Hasse with 11 kills and 10 digs. Caitlyn Dean led the Pioneers with 24 digs, while Ashley Sarmiento added 20 to help pace a defensive effort that held the Lions to an .026 hitting percentage. Mars Hill was paced by Marissa Wixson and Kaleigh Sutherland with eight kills apiece. Tusculum is now 13-4 overall, 7-2 in SAC matches. MHC is now 10-8 overall, 4-5 in conference matches.

The Lions led at several points early in the first set and pulled within 20-18 late, but the Pioneers responded with four consecutive points to put the set out of reach. A kill by Danae Stauffer finished off the run. Stauffer had nine kills on the evening.

Mars Hill jumped out to a 9-4 lead lead in the second set, but seven straight points with Sam Underwood holding serve gave the Pioneers an 11-9 lead. Mars Hill rallied to take the lead at 15-14 after a pair of attack errors, but another four-point run by Tusculum broke a 17-all tie and gave the Pioneers enough separation to earn the victory.

A pair of service aces by Dean broke a 16-16 tie in the final set. A kill by Megan Haase gave the Pioneers an 18-16 lead, and the Lions never pulled closer than two the rest of the way. The Pioneers had five service aces in the match.

Mars Hill will tavel to Milligan for a non-conference matchup on Oct. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
