Schafer Signs with Phoenix FC

PHOENIX, ARIZ.— Former Lion Isaiah Schafer has signed with professional club Phoenix FC of the USL Professional Division.

A defender, Schafer played for Mars Hill during the 2010-11 seasons. Schafer was most recently in training camp with the Seattle Sounders of the MLS. Schafer has played in the USL PRO the past two seasons with the Real Colorado Foxes.

While at Mars Hill, Schafer played in 35 games and totaled seven goals and six assists. He scored three game-winners and was a member of the 2011 Lions team that reached the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.

Schafer’s graded out as above-average in tactical and physical categories according to his 2013 Pro Soccer Combine player profile. Comments from the profile stated:

“He [Schafer] is a beast. Physically, he can own the game. He needs to watch a lot of games and see how the outside back moves and the outside mids sometimes play inside and other times wide. Use speed to your advantage. As a defender, force play wide and lots of talking. A very bright future. Will be following him.”

Former Scottish star David Robertson serves as the head coach for Phoenix FC. Founded in 2012, the team is a member of the USL Professional Division, the third tier of the American Soccer pyramid.

The USL Pro league features 13 teams competing in the 2013 season. This season, USL PRO is beginning a multi-year partnership with MLS to enhance the development of professional soccer players in North America.
