Monica Gordy was hired as the new Mars Hill College softball head coach in November of 2011.

Athletic Director David Riggins stated, "We are excited about having Monica join the Mars Hill family. She brings with her a history of success as both a student-athlete and a coach. Her commitment to the development of the well rounded student-athlete make her a perfect fit for our program.

Gordy came to Mars Hill from Louisburg College where she served the school’s head softball coach for four years. Her responsibilities included planning daily practices, conditioning, strength programs, hitting instruction, and infield and outfield instruction. She dealt with travel arrangements, alumni relations, academic monitoring, staff supervision and was the campus Wellness Committee chairperson.  While at Louisburg, her teams annually posted the highest GPA on campus with an average of 3.45.  She had seven team members in Phi Theta Kappa as well as 15 scholar athletes.  On the field, Gordy guided her squad to consecutive winning seasons during the last two years. She also developed the 2010 and 2011 Region X Player of the Year and to go along with five Region X All-Conference players.

Gordy stated, "I would like to thank the administration at Mars Hill College, especially Coach Riggins for giving me the opportunity to become a part of the Mars Hill College family. I am excited to be a part of a wonderful athletic program, and I am looking forward to many successes with the Mars Hill softball team. "

Gordy's stints as an assistant coach came at Upper Iowa University in 2007-08 and Wayne State College in 2006-07. While at both institutions, her responsibilities included hitting and infield instruction.  She was responsible for all strength and conditioning, field maintenance, recruiting, travel arrangements, equipment management, fundraising and camp and clinic planning.

Gordy played softball at Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) from 2000-04. A four-year starter at three different positions (second base, catcher, and designated player), she was named co-captain of the squad during her junior and senior seasons. On the diamond, Gordy was named the 2004 Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC). She holds the school records for career homeruns, single-season and career batting average and single-season and career RBIs.  Off the diamond, Gordy served on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Gordy earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology in May 2004 from FIT.  She plans to receive her Master’s degree in Coaching Education in May 2013 from Ohio University.
